Cool Kickstarter for the SW Ohio brewing community. Osborn Brewing is a homebrew supply store in Monroe. Brent Osborn is teaming up with a local farmer to produce locally grown hops. They are hoping to have funding in place now and have hops available as soon as 2014.

Lots of great folks involved in this project. Really cool options at the upper end of the donation scale, such as working with Jeff Fortney (who brewed for local breweries Rivertown and the now-defunct Wooden Shoe), Jeffrey McElfresh of the newly opened Yellow Springs Brewery, or Gordon Strong, who holds just about every award possible for homebrew judging and literally wrote the style guidelines. Beware, link overload.

Great news (potentially) for craft brewers in Ohio. The state house passed a law lowering the small brewer license from roughly $3,900 to $1,000 annually. This applies to breweries with less than 31 million gallons of output annually. ABInBev was not pleased with the legislation, largely due to a prohibition against breweries owning distributors, and was meeting was the governor yesterday to voice their protest. A grassroots campaign on Facebook led to calls flooding the governor's office yesterday. Rick Armon, beer writer for the Akron Beacon Journal, was reporting late yesterday that Kasich is likely to sign the bill. Let's hope he does. The lower license fee doesn't dip as low as some of our neighboring states, but it's a great start.

Interesting article circulating around Facebook today about 15 things craft brewers think but don't talk about. Some really good points here, especially the tendency for beer geeks to chase white whales while forgetting the solid, well made beers closer to home. This ties into another point--the drive for breweries to stretch themselves too thin with weird and unusual styles, often at the expense of core craft offerings. Also, the truth about beer festivals and craft beer drinking habits--that too many of beer geeks go to festivals just to get wasted, and too many beer geeks simply drink too much. Interesting points about the lack of solid beer writing in mainstream media.

Finally, I spent a lovely evening with Gus and Rachel filming a video review for Central Waters Bourbon Barrel Stout. See it below, and I claim no responsibility to the "subliminal" images.

I don't mean the threat of the imploding craft bubble (although my friend Dave has a couple of good write-ups here and here about that topic). No, I mean session beers--those beers which, to paraphrase a slogan, you have when you are having more than one.

I have a piece on the Dayton City Paper on this topic this week, available online here. Several local options available for the sub 5% beers.

Avril is Belgium's answer to
session beers.

I also sent a copy of the article to Lew Bryson, who I quoted in the article and who runs the Session Beer Project blog. After a gentle chiding about including beers up to 5% ABV (Lew is a strong proponent at capping the category at 4.5% ABV, but others shoot for 5% and I was trying to be inclusive), he turned me onto a new brewery out of Massachusetts called Notch. They only brew session beers and the beers are now available in bottles. I've yet to try one, but am hoping to have one of my East Coast friends send me some (when things settle down out there, of course).

Also, try the Avril by DuPont. They have it at Belmont Party Supply. I mention it in my article. It's only 3.5% but damn tasty. Proof that a small beer can be rewarding.

Interesting article in The Atlantic online this week about the release of dopamines at the first sip of a beer. The author notes that:

Our bodies anticipate the effects of alcohol by a conditioned response, like Pavlov's dogs. Our brains start to release euphoric signals in response to the taste of beer, even before alcohol even gets into our blood, because we seem to know what's coming.

What it doesn't seem to account for, however, is the taste of the beer. I've been known to have a beer at the end of a long day of work, and the act of pouring the beer, sitting and enjoying it helps me wind down. But the beer is always a nice, tasty craft beer. A Bud Lite or other macro-lager just wouldn't have the same impact. In fact, I'd rather just skip it altogether in that case.

Are we seeing a bubble? What happens if the bubble bursts? There are projected to be 1,000 new breweries in the next year across the US. Are we over-saturated?

Here's an interesting article in the Beer Business Daily that discusses a lot of the issues the market is seeing right now. Worth a read. Good reminder of the problems craft faced in the 1990s and how folks weathered. I anticipate, as this article hints at, that at some point, we will reach saturation levels and breweries will fall to a more sustainable level. Call it a pruning cycle. Call it approaching equilibrium. Breweries that make bad beer will die off. So will, unfortunately, breweries that make great beer but have poor business models.

We are approaching the dozen mark for new breweries in Dayton. Our region will be interesting to watch because we could be seeing the cycles mentioned in the article play out on a micro level. My hope is that all of the Miami Valley breweries succeed, all make great beer, and the Miami Valley becomes a craft beer destination. Realistically, unfortunately, there will likely be some dropoff and not all of the breweries will open or survive the first few years, for the reasons mentioned above.

What should we, as Dayton craft beer drinkers do? Try all the breweries, but be patient and don't jump to conclusions too quickly about any one brewery. It can take a few months to dial in, so if you try someone and don't like their beer, wait a few months and try it again. Once you've given everyone a fair shake, then vote with your feet and support the breweries making the good stuff and making solid choices.

UPDATE: Dave Ranly over at The Brew View has a great addition to this discussion. He's advocating to a brewery district in Dayton. Great idea. Count me in and let's make it happen, people.KevBrewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15165383562538260634noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19779146.post-86395488298363398632013-04-11T18:56:00.001-05:002013-04-11T23:29:54.310-05:00Warped Wing brewery to open downtown DaytonJoe Waizmann, AleFest founder, and three partners will be opening a brewery in the old Foundry building in downtown Dayton. Mark Fisher at DDN has the full scoop. Joe is a great guy who knows beer, so I anticipate solid beers from these guys.

John Haggerty, who was the Head Brewer of New Holland, will be brewing the beers. John brings a ton of commercial experience, with a decade at New Holland and years of experience with regional breweries before that.

Waizmann explains that "the name appeals to both the historical as well as the cool and edgy." Wing warping was the technology the Wright Brothers pioneered enable controlled powered flight. Personally, I am looking forward to my first pint of Warped IPA.

Dayton is on the verge of a craft beer explosion. Not only do we have a slew of great craft bars, but it looks like we'll have a slew of our locally produced beers, too. Waizmann notes, "these are exciting times for craft beer people in Dayton and we are excited to be contributing to the culture."KevBrewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15165383562538260634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19779146.post-87833513244754739642013-04-07T07:50:00.000-05:002013-04-07T08:21:32.113-05:00States Making Most on Beer: Ohio Ranked 5thInteresting article detailing the top 10 states generating beer-related revenue. This figure includes both macro- and microbrews, but it's still an interesting figure. Ohio ranks 5th, and 6th overall in terms of beer-related jobs. A lot of our weight undoubtably comes from having AB In-Bev in Columbus and MillerCoors in Trenton, but having Sam Adams in Cincy is also probably bumping up the numbers. World class breweries like Hoppin' Frog, Jackie O's, Great Lakes Brewing Company, Fat Heads and Brew Kettle will continue to grow, and new breweries like the eight opening here in Dayton this year will add to the number, too.

The decorations are being set, the music is ready, and the beer are arriving throughout the day. Everyone is getting very excited for the 2nd annual MSD Brew Ha-Ha, tomorrow from 6-10 pm. The event raises money for the Montessori School of Dayton, an amazing preK-8th grade school doing amazing things. (Seriously, what other school has a student-run coffee shop, several rock bands as part of the music curriculum, builds robots out of legos, creates sculptures that Dale Chihuly posts on his Facebook page, and hosts a beer festival?)

Below is the beer list, with style, ABV, and location details. Big thanks to our table sponsors. There are still tickets available online and at Belmont Party Supply, Lucky's Taproom and Eatery, The Trolley Stop, and Chappy's Taproom and Grille. Tickets will also be available at the door.

This year's beers continue with the Great Lakes region theme, but with the addition of beers from Indiana and Illinois. I'm happy to report a huge increase in Ohio beers, with outstanding offerings from Dayton and Cincinnati as well as other parts of the state.

We are beer geeks and we picked the beers we like to drink, so it shouldn't surprise anyone to find a huge number of beers that are rated either Exceptional (one asterisk below) or World Class (two asterisks below) by the beer rating site BeerAdvocate.com. And we've quadrupled the number of draft beers this year (noted as ± below), including a brewpub exclusive sour ale from Ohio's own The Brew Kettle. We've also included a cider (although not from the region, it's one of the best) and a gluten-free beer.

So without further adieu, here are the stars of the show:
The online version contained some additional questions and answers that didn't fit in the print.

An exciting time to be into craft beer in Dayton. All three breweries were great to work with, and I'm wishing them all a successful launch. Here are a few extra photos that I shot while working on the piece.
The beers have arrived, and Linda and crew have been working overtime to transform the space. Ticket sales have been brisk and initial feedback at the beer list has been great. We even picked up some free publicity thanks to WDTN this morning.

You can still get tix online tonight at $25 each, or you can pick them up at the door tomorrow for $30. Doors open at 5, but we'll be pouring until 9. Bring some cash--you'll be able to buy extra tasting tickets, as well as enter in the raffle for beer goodies. There will also be opportunities to take home your favorites from the tasting.

Tonight we train the servers and put the finishing touches on the room. Tomorrow we finalize and print the tasting program, tap the keg, and open the doors. This is going to be a blast!
The beer list for the MSD Brew Ha-Ha this Saturday is final, so I can finally release it. I'm very excited about this line-up.

It's a robust sampling of beers from OH, MI, and PA, with some of my personal favorites to share (I'm talking to you, Bell's Porter, Dark Horse Crooked Tree and Founder's Breakfast Stout!).

And a special release of Founders Double Trouble. We'll have it on tap about a week before it makes it to the area officially.

If you haven't gotten tickets, you can still purchase them at the EventBrite site or at the door on Saturday. Remember, doors open at 5 and we'll be pouring all night long.

Here's the list. See you Saturday!
Livability.com ran an article of the top ten off the beaten path beer cities (not the NYC, Chicago, San Diego, Portlands, but the next round--cities you might be surprised by). Dayton didn't make the list (obviously because of our lack of breweries), but Akron did. Kalamazoo, too. Of course, those of us who love locally produced beers probably could have guessed at those two and might have added Columbus, Cincinnati, Ann Arbor, and Grand Rapids to the list, to name a few.
Join friends, family and fellow beer aficionados for a special evening of exclusive draft beer and acoustic live music. The region's ONLY keg of Dogfish Head's "Faithfull Ale" will be tapped at 8pm. Live acoustic Pearl Jam music by Chris Reynolds (from the band "Festive Skeltons") and his trio begin at 8pm.
Faithfull Ale is a celebration of Pearl Jam's 20th anniversary as a band and its extraordinary debut album, "Ten." In recognition of these milestones, this Belgian-style golden ale is delicately hopped to 20 IBUs and fruit-forward from 10 incremental additions of black currants over a one-hour boil. Faithfull clocks in at 7% ABV.
Dogfish Head's earlier collaboration ales will also be featured with the "Miles Davis Bitches Brew" tapped at 6pm and the "Robert Johnson Hellhound on My Ale" at 7pm. Reads like a who's who of upcoming area breweries:
Mark Fisher at the Dayton Daily News just posted about the soon-to-be opened Dayton Beer Company. Great news for me, as it'll be in Kettering, about a mile from the house!

As Mark Fisher reports:

When up and running, the Dayton Beer Company will sell craft beers such as pale ale, blond ale, porter and hefeweizen for retail. The label on each type of beer celebrates aspects of Dayton’s heritage, such as Inventors IPA and Patterson Pale Ale, named for NCR founder John Patterson.

“We want Dayton to be proud of its history and to give Daytonians a product they could call their own,” said Hilgeman, a 2005 Alter High School graduate who holds a marketing and international business degree from the University of Cincinnati.
